PETRONAS, the national oil company of Malaysia, has over half a million sq km of exploration acreage of which 24% is in deepwater.
 
As Deepwater exploration and production is expected to be critical for securing future reserves , investment in deepwater technology will increase from 18%(currently) to 25% by 2011. It is also estimated by 2010 30% of national oil production will be from deepwater fields.
