SpectraSensors Water Vapor Sensing System Provides Data for NOAA / NWS
SpectraSensors, Inc., of Houston, Texas, the manufacturers of the water vapor sensing system, the WVSS-II, is supporting the nation’s weather forecasting as a member of the ARINC Team supplying aircraft meteorological data services to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service, NOAA/NWS.
The program is a partnership between NOAA/NWS and the prime contractor, ARINC, along with support from Southwest Airlines, United Parcel Service, and SpectraSensors. The WVSS-II reports real-time atmospheric moisture data from participating aircraft in the U.S. and abroad. The data are used to improve the accuracy of NWS forecasts. These forecasts are critical to protect the safety of the public, our nation’s infrastructure, and the economy. At present a total of 112 aircraft operating across the U.S. are equipped with the WVSS-II sensor to provide data supporting the vital NWS operations.
All the members of the ARINC team provide unique contributions based on their area of expertise. SpectraSensors technology allows WVSS-II to provide extremely accurate and reliable observations of the atmospheric water vapor that drives much of our weather. SpectraSensors has also acknowledged its valued suppliers and partners who help make this capability possible, including the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, UCAR, who provides the patented Aerial Sampler technology licensed for use in WVSS-II.

The U.S. programs for collecting aircraft meteorological data are the largest contributor to the World Meteorological Organization, WMO, program known as AMDAR, the Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay.
